DAY 1: ASSIN MANSO, CAPE COAST AND ELMINA CASTLES
Embark on an early morning departure from Accra to the Central Region of Ghana. Our first stop of the day will be Assin Manso to visit the Slave River. The Assin Manso Slave River was the point where the slaves took their last bath before taken into the dungeons in the Castles. The Assin Manso Slave River Site served as the place where slaves had their last bath on African soil before being marched down to the slave castles of Elmina and Cape Coast along the coast.
Continue your tour to the Cape Coast Castle to listen and see the “horrors of the slave trade”. Step inside the haunting dungeons of Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk through the infamous “Door of No Return” and hear powerful stories of resilience. This tour will take you on a journey which will expose you to the activities of the slave trade era and the effects it had on communities, nations and humanity as a whole.
End the day with a tour of the Elmina Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Monument built by the Portuguese in 1482. The castle was the first trading post built on the Gulf of Guinea, making it the oldest European building in existence below the Sahara. Discover its dark past as a hub of the slave trade and its impact on African history.
