Assin Manso Slave River Site
We begin our journey by walking the path of the ancestors to Assin Manso, the final resting place of two former slaves from the USA and Jamaica, whose remains were re-interred in August 1998 during Ghana’s first Emancipation Day Celebration.
A visit to the Slave River or Donkor Nsuo offers a powerful and emotional experience. This is the site where captured Africans took their “last bath” before being held in slave dungeons, awaiting shipment to the Americas and the Caribbean.
Cape Coast Castle
Our next stop is the historic Cape Coast Castle, built in 1664. This castle was one of over 40 slave castles and forts used as holding areas for enslaved Africans before being shipped to the Americas.
You will join a 45-minute guided tour of the castle, where you will see and hear the harsh realities of the transatlantic slave trade. The experience offers a deep and moving insight into the impact of the slave trade on individuals, communities, nations, and humanity as a whole.
Elmina Castle
We conclude our tour in the historic town of Elmina, with a visit to the Elmina Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built by the Portuguese in 1482.
Elmina Castle holds the title of the oldest European building in existence south of the Sahara, originally established as a trading post on the Gulf of Guinea. During your guided tour, you will hear harrowing stories of the transatlantic slave trade, gaining invaluable historical context and cultural perspective.
